Let’s face it: You undergo something unanticipated, and you face immense emotional disruption. What happens is that your brain ceases to regulate your emotions when everything "seems like to be falling apart." So, what do you do? Do you give in to the idea of dismay, or do you learn about how to overcome those feelings of helplessness and come out stronger and more resilient? The choice is yours. However, it turns out regulating your emotions almost always helps.
The question is HOW.
1. Feel Yourself in the Moment
Instead of looking out for ways you respond to a seemingly disturbing situation, learn to focus on your body. How does the external situation make you feel? Do you feel your hands getting warmer? Do you feel your legs trembling? How fast are you breathing? All of these things will allow you to not be reactive. When you come to acknowledge yourself, even in trying times, you learn to regulate your emotions in a better way.
2. Learn to Take Space
Always remember there is a space between the stimulus and the response. You have all the authority to take this space and make mindful decisions about how to react to that stimulus. The more impromptu about it you get, the more trouble it is going to be for you. So, whenever there is a challenging situation, learn when to take a time out and collect your thoughts. Take this time to ask yourself rational questions: Am I behaving out of impulse? What is the situation trying to tell me? How can I save myself or my loved ones from worse situations?
3. Learn The Grounding Technique
The grounding technique always helps when there is too much sensory overload, or the situation impacts you too much. When rationalization isn’t convenient to use at times, you can learn to take a mental time out. Instead of using that break to make rational decisions, you fixate your mind on things out of your present. For example, you can ground yourself into thinking about all the objects which are of a specific color in the room you are in. You might start to calculate the sum of certain numbers in your head. Whatever helps you to give you a mental break, learn to do it.
Tip: Remember the grounding technique is your last resort, and you need to apply the other two tactics to regulate your emotions and discipline your mind first. The grounding technique is usually helpful for people with severe emotional issues or anxiety.
Final Word
These points are some techniques that you can practice in your daily life to get the results you want. Remember that it might not be in your hands to take the steering wheel of a said situation.
