Advantages and Disadvantages of Working from Home in the Pandemic Period

For a long time we have been encountering more and more the notion of working from home, but during this period, when we are faced with the pandemic of COVID-19 working from home has become a normality.

If we look shortly before this period, we see that together with the legal framework of this practice more and more companies were starting to offer employees the opportunity to work from wherever they want using the equipment and systems provided by the company.

We all thought how good it would be if we could avoid morning congestion, end-of-day traffic or endless canteen queues on lunch break. Along with the introduction of this concept of "home office" or working from home, these situations are solved. Everyone who benefits from this flexibility from the employer can enjoy the comfort of their own home and solve their daily tasks. Currently, the vast majority of employees find themselves in the situation of working from home, and this sudden transition from office life to work from home has an unexpected impact.

Usually people who choose to work from home have a better return, and employers benefit both in terms of their efficiency and by exempting costs with the allocation of physical offices. The increased efficiency of those who work from home is actually a result of the implementation of activity monitoring systems on the workstations used. The implementation of such monitoring systems is common practice when we refer to employees working from different locations and should not worry anyone.

Work from home during the pandemic became normal and will most likely enjoy a growing popularity among employees even after the end of this episode. Working from home certainly has a number of benefits, but working from home isn't quite as nice as it sounds. When you are alone in the comfort of your own home there are many things that can distract you from office work. You have to show a lot of organization and self-control to carry out your day-to-day work.

A few things you can do to make sure things go the way they should:

- Set a clear agenda. It is very important to have a schedule that is well established and easy to follow, so you can avoid the little temptations around you turning into a day of sitting in front of the TV and having to work at night to recover.

- Keep communication and connections with colleagues. When you work from home it's just you, and human interaction is very low. You certainly have other colleagues who do the same thing as you do and interact frequently. You can try to keep your daily meetings through a video-conference app so you can see the reactions and expressions of others. You go to the office once in a while.

- Participate in company events. Surely the company you work for organizes different events or activities, and your participation in them is primarily important to you and your mood, so you will have that sense of belonging to a group.

Our recommendation would be to try to find a balance between working from home and working at the office so as to avoid feeling lonely and isolated. With your interaction in the office, you'll be able to share with colleagues other things besides everyday tasks, meet new people and build long-lasting relationships and friendships. Finding a balance between working from home and being in the office will certainly contribute to your mood and how you approach everyday life.

During this period we are seeing more and more companies using tools specially designed to determine the desires of employees and try to fulfill them. A number of these tools have been developed and adapted by EAP Romania, and through them, employers can be connected to the spirit of the teams and the entire organization. Using tools of predictive automation, employees receive personalized advice and guidance, and everything happens under the power of anonymity so that each person can express itself freely.
